Surviving First Year at FAST-NUCES: The Ultimate CS Freshman Guide
They say getting into FAST is hard, but graduating from FAST is harder. FAST is notorious for its brutal academic pressure. Here is how to survive your freshman year without breaking down.
1. Programming Fundamentals (PF) is God
In your first semester, Programming Fundamentals (PF) in C++ will define your trajectory. If you fail PF, you cannot take Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) in the 2nd semester, which will delay your entire degree. Practice coding daily. Do not rely solely on IDE autocompletes.
2. Sleep > Last-Minute Fixing
FAST hands out extremely heavy assignments and lab tasks. A common mistake freshmen make is pulling consecutive all-nighters. A lack of sleep directly impacts your logical reasoning in exams. Time-block your assignments instead of trying to write 500 lines of code at 3 AM.
3. Plagiarism = Academic Death
FAST uses strict plagiarism checkers (like MOSS) for programming assignments. If you copy code from a friend or directly paste solutions from ChatGPT without modifying the logic to fit your custom constraints, the absolute best-case scenario is getting a ZERO on the assignment. The worst case is an 'F' grade for the semester in that course.
4. Don't Skip Theory Courses
Calculus, Linear Algebra, and English are your buffer subjects. CS subjects are marked harshly, so you must score A's in these supporting subjects to keep your CGPA above 3.0.
