QAU Merit Calculation Guide 2026: The Federal Powerhouse
Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU), Islamabad is legally the highest-ranked general university in Pakistan. Securing a seat here requires understanding their dual-nature admission system.
1. The Provincial Quota System
Because QAU is a purely federal university, it must allocate strictly calculated seats to every province (Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, KPK, AJK, Gilgit). A student from rural Sindh might secure admission into BS IR with 75% marks on a quota seat, while a student from Punjab with 85% on open merit gets rejected. Know and apply heavily against your specific regional quota.
2. Expanding to BS Morning vs Evening
QAU operates highly competitive Morning shifts and slightly easier (but expensive) Evening/Self-Finance shifts. If you have highly mediocre FSc marks (around 65%), the only way into prestigious departments like International Relations or Defense & Strategic Studies is through the self-finance evening lists.
3. The Shift Towards Departmental Testing
Historically, QAU admitted purely on FSc marks. Recently, heavily technical departments (like CS/IT from the Department of Computer Sciences) mandate an entrance test. If your field requires a test, treat it as a make-or-break filter, as FSc grade inflation has rendered pure mark-based admissions obsolete.
