Managing Mental Health and Seeking Support on Pakistani Campuses
University depression and anxiety are massive taboo topics in Pakistan, but the sheer academic pressure makes them incredibly common.
1. Utilize the On-Campus Counseling Center
Almost all major HEC-recognized universities (NUST, LUMS, COMSATS) have dedicated psychological counseling centers on campus. The services are completely free and strictly confidential. Your professors will never know you visited.
2. Separation of Worth and Grades
Pakistani culture tightly bind a student’s entire worth to their academic output. If you fail a course, you feel like a failure in life. You must mentally decouple these. Failing a calculus exam means you didn't know the integration rules, not that you are intellectually useless.
3. Talk to Your Advisors
If a family emergency or severe depression is destroying your semester, do not silently fail. Visit your academic advisor or Head of Department. HEC allows students to freeze a semester (take a formal break without losing admission status) under extreme mental or physical distress.
