The Burnout Prevention Guide for Engineering Students
By week 12 of a 16-week semester, engineering students frequently experience complete mental exhaustion. You stop caring about assignments and ignore quizzes. This is academic burnout.
1. Recognize the Physical Signs
Burnout isn't just "being lazy." If you suffer from constant headaches, inability to sleep despite being tired, and intense brain fog when looking at simple equations, you have hit your limit. You need an immediate intervention.
2. The 24-Hour Digital Disconnect
You cannot recover from burnout by scrolling on TikTok for 6 hours. When you feel completely exhausted, take 24 hours entirely away from screens. No coding, no social media, no lecture slides. Let your dopamine receptors reset.
3. Lower Your Standards Temporarily
Perfectionism causes burnout. If an assignment is worth 2% of your grade and will take 8 hours to perfect, but only 2 hours to get a "passable" mark—choose the 2 hours. Protect your mental stamina for the upcoming 25% midterm.
