Lost the Job Because of Spoken English? How Graduates Can Fix It
You can have a 3.8 CGPA and excellent programming skills, but if you freeze during the HR interview, the job will go to someone with a 2.8 CGPA who speaks fluently.
1. The Interview is a Scripted Play
Corporate interviews are not dynamic conversations; they are highly predictable. You will always be asked: "Tell me about yourself," "What was your FYP," and "Where do you see yourself in 5 years." Do not improvise these answers. Write them down, refine the vocabulary, and practice them out loud 50 times in front of a mirror until they sound natural.
2. Focus on Clarity, Not Accent
Pakistani students often mistakenly try to emulate a fake American or British accent, which sounds incredibly jarring and causes them to stumble. HR does not care about your accent. They care about Clarity and Pacing. Speak 20% slower than your normal Urdu speaking speed, enunciate your technical terms clearly, and breathe between sentences.
3. The Shadowing Technique
To fix grammatical stutters in real-time, watch corporate English podcasts or technical keynotes (like Google I/O). Do not just watch—repeat the sentences out loud immediately after the speaker, mimicking their pauses and flow. This trains your brain to structure English sentences automatically without pre-translating them from Urdu in your head first.
