Extracurricular Activities in Pakistani Universities: Why They Matter
Corporate HR departments use a 3.5 CGPA as a baseline filter. They use your extracurricular portfolio to actually hire you.
1. The Society Presidency Leverage
Running a massive university society (like the ACM Chapter, the Debating Society, or the Model UN) proves functional management. When you tell a recruiter you organized an event for 1,500 students, managed a 500,000 PKR budget, and negotiated with local corporate sponsors, you are proving you already possess corporate project management skills.
2. Specific Skill Acquisition
Joining a tech society forces you into the "hackathon" circuit. Joining the media club forces you to master Adobe Premiere and DSLR operations. These are completely functional, hirable skills that the theoretical university syllabus completely ignores. You frequently learn more marketable tools in a 3-day society event than in an entire semester class.
3. The Danger of Over-Commitment
Universities frequently contain "resume padding" societies that do absolutely nothing but print fake certificates. Avoid these. Additionally, if your extracurricular involvement causes your GPA to crash below a 2.7, you have mathematically disqualified yourself from management trainee programs regardless of how many events you organized. Balance is absolute law.
