How to Mathematically Recover When You Fail Your Midterms
Getting a 7/25 on a midterm exam feels like a death sentence for your semester grade. However, mathematically, you can still easily score a B+ if you deploy the right strategy.
1. Understand the Weightage Distribution
Most universities follow this strict breakdown:
- Quizzes/Assignments: 25%
- Midterm: 25%
- Final Exam: 50%
If you scored 7/25, you lost 18 marks out of the grand 100. That means you still have the potential to score an 82% (A- grade) if you get perfect marks on everything else.
2. Maximize the "Free" Sessional Marks
The 25% allocated to assignments and quizzes are basically free marks. Ensure your assignments are pristine. Negotiate with your professor to submit an extra "bonus" assignment to cover an earlier bad quiz grade.
3. Change Your Midcourse Strategy
If the midterm was entirely numerical and you only studied theory, clearly the professor prefers application over memorization. Pivot your final exam prep to solving end-of-chapter textbook problems rather than just reading slides.
4. Attend Office Hours
Go to the professor's office. Show them your failed midterm and ask, "Sir, I struggle with this specific step, how can I improve for the final?" Professors heavily favor students who actively show initiative to fix their failures.
