Faculty "Red Flags": What to Check Before Course Registration
Choosing the wrong professor will ruin your semester. Here are red flags to watch out for during course registration or the Add/Drop week.
1. "I never give A's"
If a professor boasts on the first day about how no student has ever secured an 'A' grade in their class, take them seriously. They view grading strictly as a gatekeeping mechanism rather than a reflection of student learning. Drop the course and select another section.
2. The Slides Reader
If a professor exclusively reads bullet points directly off PowerPoint slides without drawing diagrams, coding live, or explaining the mathematical background, they are not teaching you. You will have to learn the entire course on YouTube via Indian tech channels instead.
3. The Unclear Grading Matrix
If a professor cannot explain exactly what percentage midterms, finals, and quizzes are worth by week 2, they will likely grade on extremely subjective, arbitrary terms at the end of the semester. Predictability is your best friend in university.
